Pixar's WALL-E is more than likely one of my favorite animated movies because after watching a SFX/VFX walkthrough from the company, I was blown away. They spent months perfecting camera angles, aesthetic and depth of field...all within in RenderMan (their 3D software.)

DISFORM 2012 from Dani Wolf on Vimeo.
This video was done with OpenGL in programming and what I believe to be Maya assets. Disform is especially interesting because it uses OpenGL to have these assets adapt to the sound of music. So that when a band is playing, the signs will adapt to the beats and rhythm in real-time.

This is just a video I found of something that is close to what I'd like to do for this animation project.

Overthinking from yael weiser on Vimeo. |
I could image this video being in a gallery for the simple reason that it is very, very experimental and strange. To find this beauty, I went through the motion graphics international site. However, I still consider this a form of video production even though it includes both motion graphics and video footage.

I really enjoy this video because it very minimalistic yet it is visually stunning. All of the angles and imagery they shoot and capture from are simply breathtaking. The low lighting and deep color tones are really what sells this piece to me. While I really love this footage and want to create it, I am not sure if I can make something close this. However, this is what I decided to choose!

Sound
Furniture Muzak
This first example of a sound installation is by a personal friend of mine, Gabby Issac and her friend Brianna Vidovich. In this installation, they take pre-recorded sounds of smashing objects, ambient sound from the space and movement to create background music.
Foley
I decided on this video because it is funny but also demonstrates the art of Foley.
Appropriation
David Barton
I decided on David Barton’s appropriation art because it is relatable to me. I am not an Art major so I don’t have a strong underlining knowledge of classic art in art history. Therefore, David Barton is a great choice. His art mixes classic, well-known paintings and arts with modern pop-culture references. My personal favorite is Monet’s Vader with Parasol because Stars Wars is awesome and Monet is a recognizable artist so anyone can see the humor and history without feeling like they need to be an art history buff.
Digital Collage
Danai Gknoi
Yes, I know you said to not use an artist that was introduced in the lecture but this artist really spoke to me. Danai Gkoni really capture the essence of motion and story-telling in her art. Out of all the digital collage artist I saw, she was one of the best in my opinion. Most the other artist, just did masks over certain pieces of the art; the face, the clothes, etc. But Gkoni doesn’t just use masking to make a collage; it is almost like she is cutting pieces out of magazines or pictures and gluing them straight into her photos. I also like her underlying dystopian and organized chaos themes. |
Mel Bochner: Text Artist
Text Art in Use
Varsity: Cult of PersonalityPersonally, I really enjoy typography on album covers for bands. Yes, advertisements are cool and interesting but I think album art is more expressive because as an artist you must make an album cover that fits your music and “aesthetic.” Also I find there is a lot more room for flexibility when it comes to the design.
This choice is from the band Varsity’s album Culture of Personality. I really, really like the style of this image and how the text wraps around the mug. It isn’t in your face with the words. Subtle, clean and creative all in one. You can get a good read on what you might be getting into if you picked this up at store. |
