Bio and Artistic Influences
I work for Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, in the IT Integration Services department. I have a Bachelor’s degree in History, a Master’s degree in Education Leadership and a Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (=map making!). Now that the dry stuff is out of the way, I have three grown children, two dogs, three cats, a fish and roughly 50 plants (air plants, cacti and succulents). I like nature walks, digging through thrift stores for upcycling treasures, and supporting the growth of downtown Phoenix through volunteering at Local First Arizona and local art organizations. I am also a little bit of a sci-fi nerd, with my favorite being The Lord of the Rings (books) and Star Trek (old and new - not really a fan of DS9).
I was very lucky to have a position using GIS created for me after I completed my GIS degree. So, while I still have to do some less exciting work, I get to create maps and Story Map apps for the grants that the Teacher College receives. I also train faculty and students on how to use GIS in their classrooms. The GIS side of my job has required a lot more design than I have previously encountered, which I find to be both exciting and scary since I am not very good at it! So, I decided to take this class because I wanted to expand (ok, bring into existence) my creative side, while also developing skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for my work.
I have always loved native and aboriginal art and have an affinity for wood block art. I discovered Gustave Baumann at a Phoenix Art Museum exhibit a few years ago and fell in love with his work. Lately, I have found that I enjoy illustrations with a mid-century influence, like the art of National Parks Anniversary Collection.
