Creating the Lie
Lies of beauty, Lies of history, Lies of culture, Propaganda, Fantasy, Utopias, stories.
DUE: TUESDAY 9/27
Artist Statement and image(s) should be on a page called “Photoshop” or the name of your project) under your personal web page on the class website.
Task:
Create an image that would not normally exist in the world using digital images and Photoshop. You may build on your photoshop exercise ideas or go in another direction.
Materials:
-Digital Camera
-Hard Drive
-Photoshop
You will create an image that would never be able to be captured by a camera. Using multiple images to seamlessly collapse each image together to push the limits of reality. Make this lie look believable. The project will be one completed 11” by 14” 300 DPI image or three 8” by 10” 300 DPI Images (or what is best suited for your project).
Images must be original or purposefully appropriated. Ex: historical websites.
If you want a picture of cow you cannot steal someone’s images of a cow.

From where am I creating this lie, It is story based or did I dream it?
What is reality? How can I exaggerate reality?
Does my project have humor or a serious tone? And how could I push these tones? How can I make it appear seamless?
How does the art of lying and honesty appear from my daily life can live in my art? How can I make the image interesting?
Evaluation:
Standard Critique Grading Rubric. Total Score out of 40

- Sketch out ideas
- Shoot or Scan your source images
- Try out multiple processes to get final image
- Ask advice
- Finalize PSD, export JPG. Load to a new page in your section of the Weebly.

Public Domain, History and Appropriation in Art
Exercise Assignment #3 - 20 points
Must include all elements and be turned in on time for class discussion to receive full points.
DUE: Thursday, September 15th at the beginning of class for discussion.
Objective: To discover the archival of public domain imagery through internet libraries and use a personal selection of the images in a new, multi-layered, photoshop image.
Create TWO Images by combining downloaded, appropriated images from the list of resources provided. Images need to be 8” x 10” or standard copy paper 8.5” x 11”
Images must contain at least 3 layers each. (It could have many more.)
Example: Background, a dog added, a person added.
AT LEAST 2 LAYERS NEED TO BE FROM AN IMAGE ARCHIVE.
You may add additional layers from your own photography.
No copyrighted images from other photographers. (Ask if you are in question about an image.)

There are a few other sites out there, (For Example: National Forest Service) that you can use. However, for the purposes of this exercise it's best to stick to the above listed. For your project you can branch out more if need be.
2. Download images from websites, download more than you think you will need.
Make a note of what archive each image came from by saving them in seperate folders or some sort of note in the name of the file. When you share your images on Weebly make a note underneath where the images came from.
3. If unfamiliar with photoshop, watch layers tutorial or follow layers handout.
4. Create two new documents in photoshop, both 8” x 10” or 8.5” x 11”
5. Add images, create layers, compose image.
6. Save as JPEGS and place in your section of the website.
ON A NEW PAGE. Do not use the blog.
Labeled with a title we will understand is your photoshop unit exercise.
